Iron self-discipline is a good thing in key areas. For the Christian, these include the negatives against the lust of the flesh (food and sex), the lust of the eyes (greed), and the pride of life (power over others). On the positive side, showing up for worship with others, prayer and Bible reading.
But the goal of the iron discipline must be something more spontaneous, loving relationships. There seems to be a tension here.
